RTA Prefab Dwelling
Concept for a modular, reconfigurable, prefabricated dwelling.
RTA PREFAB HOUSE
The RTA House is a case study and winning submission designed to address issues particular to current stick-frame construction practices. Specifically, the RTA House minimizes the amount of waste created by construction, renovation and demolition.
Standard two-by-four construction generates large quantities of material waste during its entire life cycle because of the difficult and costly disassembly process for renovations and demolition. The Prefab building industry has proven that it is possible to reduce initial construction waste by using pre-designed and constructed models based on standardized material dimensions. The RTA house takes advantage of this precedent and goes one step further to create a system that reduces waste at every stage of the building life cycle.
Prefabrication allows for a nail-free fastening system. Building components can be easily removed and disassembled for reuse or recycling, consequently, eliminating waste during renovations and additions or at end-of-use. Standardized modules allow the exchange of components on or between RTA houses, reducing renovation and demolition waste. Components may be used, re-used, or reconfigured.
Assembly of the components in a controlled warehouse environment reduces number of connections and simplifies disassembly.
